Last update: October 21st, 2002

This page lists a number of known issues with Divine Divinity and suggested workarounds.

Important notices

First of all, we cannot stress enough the importance of making sure your drivers are up to date, that you have the latest service packs from Microsoft installed and that you are running at minimum DirectX8.1b.

Second, make sure you have the latest patches or hotfixes installed. Click here for a list of the available patches and hotfixes for the different language versions.

Known problems and suggested solutions

1) Problem: No sound or strange artifacts while the sound is playing
This problem definitely occurs with older SB Live drivers and the solution is simply to get the latest drivers. On some systems, this problem got solved by turning the windows hardware acceleration of the sound driver down by one notch.

2) Problem: Strange splotches of color at certain times during the game
This problem seems to only occur on Windows ME system with a NVidia Geforce based card in it. One solution which usually does the trick is the following:

In the folder where you installed Divine Divinity, open the run folder and open the file config.lcl in notepad. At the bottom of the file, add the line SplotchProblem 1 (followed by enter). Save the file and restart the game.

3) Problem: Crash during the scrying scenes
On some systems, most notably some Radeon cards and some 3DFX cards, the game crashes during the scrying scenes when running the game in Direct3D. To solve this, run the game in Software or Directdraw mode for the duration of the scrying scenes.

4) Problem: I made backups from my savegames and now I can’t load them anymore
When you copy files from a CD to your HDD, the read-only flag is set by Windows, preventing Divine Divinity to open these files for writing. Clear the read-only flag by right clicking on the files, selecting properties, unchecking the read only flag and then clicking on apply.

5) Problem: Random crashes
We have had a number of reports on random crashes. Most of these could be solved by doing one of the following things :

  • Make sure all your drivers are up to date and you have the latest service packs and windows updates installed.
  • Turn down the windows hardware acceleration of the sound driver down by one notch.
  • Make sure the color depth of your desktop is set to 16 bits.
  • Make sure the integrity of your files is not compromised by executing a scandisk.
  • Make sure you have no other applications running in the background
  • Make sure you have enough free hard disc space
  • Make sure you have full read/write access to the folder where you installed Divine Divinity

You also might want to check if there is a file called error.txt in the run folder of the folder where Divine Divinity was installed, as it might contain helpful hints.

6) Problem: I get CRC errors during the installation of Divine Divinity
Please contact CDV support for this problem. The means of contacting them are listed at the back of the manual. They are usually capable of providing solutions.

7) Problem: I cannot save anymore
Sometimes the game prevents you from saving. This is usually the case during scenes which are busy. When the scenes end, you will be able to save again. There is one known bug with this and that is with the encounter with Zombie Jake after he kidnapped Elora. You must kill him if you want to be able to save again. This issue will be addressed in a future patch.

8) Problem: I’ve lost focus of my player character
You most likely have your shift-lock key on which puts the game in non-focus-on-player-character mode. Switch it off and the game will jump back to your player character.

9) Problem: The game crashes on start up/switching maps with a minimum installation
On some systems there are problems with the minimum install. Doing a full install usually solves the problem.

10) Problem: I’ve lost my interface and it’s been replaced by three lines
Not a bug but a feature. Try right clicking on the three lines – you will see that your interface bar pops back up again. If you right click again on the interface bar, you will see it be replaced by the three bars. The three bars represent your health, mana and stamina.

11) If you are experiencing random crashes/freezes or other unexplained problems and have an AMD processor together with a VIA motherboard (running a VIA chipset made between 1997 and 2001), you might want to check out the following information:
The following patches are known to address the following problems which might have an adverse affect on the correct execution of Divine Divinity :

  • Files copied from one IDE hard disk drive to another are corrupted
  • The computer stops ("freezes", "hangs", "locks up"), or makes unusual noises when playing sounds, especially to a Creative-brand sound card
  • The computer stops, or files are corrupted, when copying to or from an IDE DVD, CDROM, or CDRW drive
  • Sounds played by the computer are distorted or have a "crackling" noise, especially sounds from a Creative-brand or Aureal-brand sound card
  • The computer stops when playing 3D graphics or games, especially on an ATI Radeon series video card
