How about the alchemist in the village?

The alchemist will require a little searching to find; formula can be bought or found (though will just help fill up your inventory until you can talk to an alchemist).

The alchemist is

Click to reveal..

inside

Click to reveal..

in the cellar of the miller's house.
No, you didn't do anything wrong; a few people have run into a bug where NPCs were missing. With the Developer's Cut version of Divinity 2 you could probably use the Developer Mode cheat window to teleport Stone to you, or vise versa.
If you are playing the original PC release of Ego Draconis, you should be able to get an upgrade to the Developer's Cut version (see here), but the saves are not compatible between D2:ED and DKS/D2:DC.

If you email your save to support@larian.com, with a (...)

When I reread my own 2 posts in this thread I must honestly say I WAS in a very BAD mood when writing all that about Hall of Echoes, Wastelands ... "the point of NO return" ...
Now I understand it all better (I believe) : it is PART OF the Main Storyline .

And after the relaese of Flames of Vengeance all sad feelings about "point of no return" with Hall of Echoes melt like snow in the sun, immediately ! <img src="<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif" alt="smile" title="smile" height="15" width="15" />

Yeah, it seems that both parties of the soul forge need to be living, or at least that's the supposition (the situation with Damian and Ygerna being a bit odd.) I gather that as long as one party is living, the other will continue to live as long as nothing interferes with either of them, such as someone wielding a pointy sword.
