I originally started this game on my home PC, visited Verdistis with no problem. I've installed the game on this PC, copied the save game folder over, and whenever I try going to Verdistis the game crashes.

I can go to the Dark Forest just fine.

I have tried both minimal and maximum reinstalls.

Do you have any recent saves you can re-load? Can you get to the council hall, assuming you are that far in the game yet?

Try deleting all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.

A couple people have had this problem due to a corrupt world.x1 file, and were able to play after replacing it with a copy from the most recent working save they had.
See; Game crashes when I try to return to Verdistis

The world.* files store the status of quest opened doors/hatches, as well as any items left directly on the ground. If you need to replace the file, but this causes problems, there are work-arounds.

I'm not that far in the game. I may (??) be able to get that far in the game if it will help somehow...

Tried that.

Since I imported the save game from another computer, there is no "working" save on this PC. I can start a new game, if that will give me a valid world.x1. (For no good reason) I wonder if it might be a DirectX9 problem?

This link sounds perfect. I'll check it out. Could you elaborate on what happens to the completed / discovered quest structure when I replace world.x1? In other words, is using a new game's world file a bad idea, or do I only lose the items on the ground [which is no big deal]?

Please elaborate on the "work-arounds."

Thanks, I like it here.

I removed the world.x1 file from my save directory, and I was able to go to Verdistis. The game has created a new world.x1. Phew.

The council hall and Verdistis are kept track of in the same files (.1 and .x1 extensions). If you could get to one but not the other, it could have meant there was something else wrong, or the world.x1 file was only partially corrupt.

There are a couple hatches in Verdistis which are opened by quests (such as in the general store). Had you already done these quests, a new world file would have closed the hatch. In Verdistis this is not a big problem, though, as far as being locked out of important locations. This would have been a problem in the council hall, but you don't get there until after going to the castle (which you don't need to rush).

It doesn't sound like you need them, but the work-arounds for sealed locations are;
FIX for the Missing Catacombs Portal
or
Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor

a fix for possible missing quest items is;
Lost Items - guide and directory of inventory files

Im having the same problem. When I try to go to Verdistis, I click Yes, a load screen comes up, but it doesn't look like it loads, because the bar dont turn red, after about 5 sec's waiting for it to start loading, it goes back to the game, and it looks like inside a castle or something, then after 1 sec the game closes.
I have tried all mentioned, deleted all in dynamic, I have made a fresh install, I have tried older save games, where I can get to this point, no files with extention .x1 or .1 are located in the save game folders.
But still, game crashes when trying to enter Verdistis...

Verdistis has a wall around it, so the gate does look a bit like a castle.

Try running the configuration program and switching to software mode. There is a cut scene conversation when you first get there, though I thought you had to take a couple steps to trigger it.

Try the file verification method described in Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure). Maybe there is a problem with the default world.x1 file, or something.

Have you installed the latest patch?

Tried Software mode, same thing.

Running v1.34 of game, character started with v 1.00, I patched directly from 1.00 to 1.34

Im considering starting over again, but thats a last resort to this problem,Ive found some nice stuff I dont wanna loose.
And worst would be if restarting didnt help solve this problem.

Try deleting the files in the dynamic folder, start a new game and save, use iZakaroN's SaveEditor to bump up the constitution, re-load and run to Verdistis. That should let you know if a new game would encounter the same problem, or not.

Thx alot for the help.
I did like you said, ran all the way there, and game didn't crash.
It still sucks that I have to start all over again though <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />
Well I guess the error might come from that the character was created on v1.00 or something, I dunno.

That is strange.... why would one save before entering Verdistis be any different than another? Maybe the story files (or something) are corrupt, and updating them on entering Verdistis causes the crash???
Did you try your latest save after this? It shouldn't matter if it was started under the original version.

I have discovered that corrupt inventory files were causing the problem.
I created a new char, saved that game without doing anything, and copied the following files from the new save to the one not willing to go to Verdistis:
inv.* files and items.000 (Seems like items.000 stores info about better quality items, like green, yellow)
