I hope the US wins a medal soon. Congratz to everybody who won, and even entered!

Did you hear Iraq and Afghanistan sent their first women for the first time in like 100 years!?

And a women of African Descent from France ( Viva La France!) won Silver in a swim, being the first "black women ever to win a medal in swimming" or in like 50 years or something.

Yippie all!

I am back!
Just got home from vacations.
Sorry I am late but I wish good luck to all the athlets who compete *clean* and I thank everybody who watched the ceremony. I was really moved to see all those foreign people in my country full of joy. Congrats to all the countries who competed even if they did not win a metal.
I was amazed with a 14 year old Malasian athlet in diving. I thought he was very good. I also liked so much a German athlet (who reminded me Al) who was very young.
Hope everyone had a nice time in my country and I wish those events could take place more offten so people all over the world could get together.

Besides you can't compare countries by number of medals, the usa for example has naturally more athletes and thus more chances on medals. Going to the olympics needs to be funded as well, and not every country can afford to send as much athletes as they could.

In my opinion athletes on the olympics shouldn't represent a country unless its a team sport.

I agree.

Nobody would really think it a fair contest to pit a small country against a huge one. The big ones have population sizes equivalent to many small countries put together, and also often much better resources to provide training facilities for elite athletes.

For instance the USA won about twice as many medals as Australia. But the USA has something like 290 million people whereas Australia has a mere 20 million. So it seems that it takes 7 or 8 Americans to beat one Australian.

Australia usually comes 4th at the Olympics, behind USA, China and Russia, all of which have vastly bigger populations.

But I do agree that it would be nice if everybody could compete as individuals and tone down the raging nationalism a bit, particularly on TV. I guess when you have a big team of athletes competing, the local audience naturally wants to see their own competitors on TV. And that doesn't leave much air time for the other nation's triumphs. I imagine that US TV would have little time to show anything but US athletes. At least we saw a few of the other events here.

Actually it would just take one American boy scout to beat 7 or 8 Australians :P

Luc, that young boy is from my state! shame on me for not knowing about it earlier.

from his name i gather that he's one of the natives (like me, except from different tribe/race) & he looks so under 10. u're right, he deserves to be cheered even on cute looks alone. another diver, who is female, also 14 years old but she looks so much larger than him! i guess his hormones has yet 2 kick in.

too bad his placing is just one step away from the finals. being the youngest, smallest, shortest, lightest, cutest .... .

post-mortem: i feel this year's olympic is the best as medals are more distributed among participating countries. this time US won only about half the amount of medals they won previously. China holds up very well. Russia drops down the list & other countries (can't remember any right now) provide competitions more fierce than before. it's refreshing. no longer do big countries have a strong hold on the medals. it's reducing & i hope the next olympic event will carry the same trend which means balance is coming about in world class sports.

Luc, u have every reason to be proud of this Olympic event.
