Today we got our first Medal. Markus Rogan was second at 100m backstroke.

Winner was Aaron Peirsol (US)

isn't that kinda stupid there are as much medals to win in running and swimming diciplines as in all other sports together?.

well dragh, i guess we can have synchronised cycling, bicycle diving, 100m & 200m bicycle dash, obstacle cycle, the old 'Run Away!' cycle & much much more!

i hope nobody wil ever consider synchronised track event or tour de swimming pool event to increase medal counts on the two major sports.

I was either thinking about best out of x disciplines.

like who scores best on all short distance swimming disciplines gets a medal, instead of 1 guy having a medal for 100 m backstroke and another guy for 200m backstroke, then someone has a medal for 100m "butterfly stroke" etc etc. Who's the best swimmer? the one with gold for 100m breaststroke or the one with gold for 200m breastroke? I say you attend all 3 100, 200 and 400m tracks and your combined score determins if you get a medal or not.

same for sprint tracks, and for long distance running 2000m or 4000m? c'mon.

Rant on: Seriously, you compare 100m runs to 400m runs? Have you ever done any serious competitive running/swimming? There's a pretty big difference. One requires training of short-twitch muscle fibres (Strength) and the other long-twitch muscle fibres (endurance). You can see this if you watch decathlete's times for their events. Almost all of the gold-medal winner's times/jump distances will be close to the individual world records with the exception of the 1500m. Most of the decathlon's events are sprint/power based apart from this endurance race. (also Daley Thompson's worst event) Most good decathletes concentrate on the 'explosive power' events.

Swimming's even worse. Even the 100 and 50m sprints are usually won by a different class of athelete. There are so many different medal classes in athletics because there are so many specialities basically. I loved sprint swimming (100m) and middle-distance running myself (400m). (School + district athletics)

Apparantly we can do some jumping on horses backs.(Silver)

Yesterday, the Belgians had horse-jumping. One of the horses fell when it jumped and broke his thigh. They brought the horse to hospital to operate, but noticed that it was worse than they first thought and... had to give it a deadly injection

never mind us malaysians. we normally resist all attempts to win those metal coins u call medals. so we suck at sports, so what?

errr are you good at anything then? Every country can win medals, just need enough motivated athletes. Wich is lacking more and more, the motivation to do sports. Ppl compete on the workfloor, how boring is that, competing in sports is much more fun an healty.

The Japanease swimmer guy who won and then screamed and hit the water with his hand scared me! I thought he was going to charge us with a samari ( sp? ) sword! Eeek!


But good job to all those winning ANY kind of medels. Hey, you need to be good to even get TO the olympics at all!
