Can anyone give me a rough idea of what level a character should be before entering certain areas?
I'm playing through for the first time and have just reached the guy that gives a quest to blow up an orc supply train. I'm level 8 and the Elite orcs nearby are slaughtering me (and the npc guards) utterly.

There was no rush to get the escort (as long as you didn't forget about it, and get into some of the later, more involved main plot quests). Likewise, there is no need to do the army quests right away (especially at such a low level).

In general, if things are too tough, try exploring in a different direction, or check merchants for better equipment. Try Ars Magicana, north east of the farmlands, to the far east of the cursed abbey; you should have less trouble reaching there if you stay close to the paths.

Have you finished off the Aleroth catacombs, and cleared the orcs around that town? The troll cave west of the bridge may be a little tough now, and you should wait until you get the quest in the farmlands to clear it out before doing so. I started exploring to the south of the farmlands, castle, etc but had trouble with giant orcs (SE) and troll kings (SW). I switched directions, and went north east, which is probably the easiest area in the section of Rivertown east of the river (outside of the farmlands and other populated areas). After that I did some of the north west area (around the cursed abbey); it would be easier with a ranged attack, compared to melee, though Spell Shield can help out with the poison attacks (damage comes off the shield, and your character doesn't jerk around with a lowered offense/defense from the poison). Spellbooks can be bought, though early in the game you may not have a lot of gold or loot to trade with.

I'm not sure what level is adequate for various areas. Checking some of my old saves, I was level 10 after getting the quest to blow up the supply train, after which I headed back to clear the area west of the river. I went through a fair bit of the rest of the map, and was level 18 when I went back to the army camp to clear the south east corner (south of the dwarven bread inn, and east of the army camp) and blow up the supply train. I still had not been to the cursed abbey, but had cleared the south west corner of the map. The cursed abbey may be a little difficult until you are at least in the high teens for character level; I think I was in the low twenties by the time I got there (cleared the orcs out first).

If you can find or buy a spider statuette, it will allow you to do the army quests fairly easily. Orcs are friendly towards spiders, and you will only need to transform back to a human briefly to place the explosives.

Instead of heading straight to the supply train, stay to the north a bit, where there are weaker opponents, then head east. After forming a path, you can slowly work your way south by clearing successive east/west strips of land. That way you can take out the weaker opponents first and would not get completely surrounded (the only live orcs would be to the south); if you attract any groups, you will have room to withdraw, so they spread out a bit chasing you, and then turn to fight again (assuming a couple spin attacks don't take care of the weaker orcs, if you are playing a warrior).

Drink a shadow potion to become invisible and complete the quest, then come back later and clear out the orc camp. Heavy and Elite orcs are in their 20's level-wise, and there are some in the heart of the camp in their 30's.

Level adequacy really depends on your character build though. A level 8 mage with lightning, freeze, and some mana potions could clear out the war-camp easily while a warrior would probably need to wait until he's about the same level as his foe.

The survivor's skill "know creature" may be worth investing in - it will show the creature's level and stats up to a certain point - it can let you know when a creature will be beyond your ability even before you start fighting.

You could also check the bestiary to see how powerful your enemies are.

I would stay in the northern, more populated areas and woods killing snakes and boars to gain experience, before I went to places like the troll cave, the orc camp, or the cursed abbey.

@Raze: Isn't there a danger of failing the escort quest if you wait too long?

There is no time limit for the escort quest, but if you complete any of the 3 main plot quests that give you an invitation to the castle (the army quests, the plague or the old duke's murder) the healers will move on their own. If you had not healed the 2 soldiers in Aleroth by then, those quests will also fail.

If you skip restoring Mardaneus' sanity (by clearing out the catacombs), his status will get reset (and the related quests will fail), but I am not sure exactly when (somewhere between getting an invitation to the castle and scrying for the human council member).

There is only one specifically timed quest; in Verdistis, if you agree to commit arson, you must do so that game day or someone else will get to it first.

Everything except the trollcave west of the river is appropriate for levels 10 and under. The farmlands are good for levels 10-13.

You should be at least level 10 if you are thorough in clearing out the area around Aleroth, because the enemies after that are all at level 10 or higher.

Everything above ground except the Cursed Abbey on the first map north of the Dwarven village are good for levels 11-17. You WILL run into a few level 20+ corpses and zombies, the latter of which have over 1000 HP, but it's hard to seperate the level 13 enemies from the undead ones, so it's better to just kill them instead of running away and coming back.

The orc battleground and dwarven forest are good for levels 13-19, but the Orc camp is for levels 30-40 so don't get in too deep.

The dark forest and Verdistis sewers are good for levels 30-35, although some groups of mountain trolls are level 45.

Basically, once you're in the farmlands, if you're at level 11 or so, clear out the enemies and start questing.
