They can be depending on how 'rare' and how 'old' they are. But there are some killer cards or just card combinations that aren't all that rare. The premise is you start out with 20 life and the first person to reach 0 loses (if just two people are playing). Some cards are hard to defend against, the ones that strike directly at your life instead of one of your creatures.

yeah, some are very valuable. I have "coat of arms". In EEK it is 349.- (1 USD = 15.5 EEK) Calculate it yourself.

You were right - 7 Mana! She is pretty cool.

If this is to big a picture - let me know and I'll remove it.

  1. mana cost: 5 of "any" mana, plus 1 of yellow, plus 1 of blue
  2. card type/sub-type: Creature/Angel
  3. series icon (each series has a unique icon)
  4. special abilities, costs, rules, etc.
  5. attack/defense rating

The upper right of each magic card always tells you how much mana you need. Magic divides mana into Plains (*), Fire (red), Water (Blue), & Black - I also think there's a nuetral (I haven't played in awhile, so my memories a little fuzzy). You can't put a card into 'play' if you don't have enough mana (also the correct type) out on the table to play that a character card.

As BG said, the 5 means 5 of any kind of mana, the '*' means one Plains and the blue 'drop' means one Water. She's pretty expensive, but she can attack and no one can defend against her - so she damages the player themselves (you only start out with 20 life). So if I have the angel and I attack you, you lose 4 life unless you can some how foil my attack. If I get your life down to zero - you lose.

sounds like a cool game
but how can you understand exactly what the abilities are of a card based only upon that 1 line..?

Actually, you have to take that one line (usually a card has a few more - this one is fairly straight forward) plus the damage and defense it has 4/4. She does 4 damage, so in this case she will 'fly' right through any defenders you have and do direct damage to you the player - unless you have some other card that will stop her damage. She can 'defend' with up to a 4 - say you have a card that has 3/4 (3 damage, 4 defense) and you attack me and I decide to defend with her. Your card 'dies' and she doesn't (if I remember right, she won't take any damage because she is protected from all colors - someone who has played more recently could help on this though).

About in the middle - her significance is she is 'protected' from all colors and she pretty much attacks the player directly. Think of it this way - you start out with 20 'life' and your goal is to take your opponent down to 0 'life', so you play just like a card game - you each take 'turns'. You have to get enough 'mana' cards down to play one of your creature cards and you can only put one 'mana' down each time you have a turn (that's supposing you have any mana cards in your hand - 7 cards each player to start). No matter what kind of creature card the other player has on the table - the Angel can fly right through their defenses to attack them personally. So in a simple game, unless they can come up with something to 'kill' the Angell or defend themselves - it would only take 5 hands (or less if they're already damaged) after the Angel came out to 'kill' your opponent. That's why it's so expensive to bring her out. Some cards are cheap (cost less mana to bring out) and thus can do some damage to the other player early in the game. This is keeping the strategy simple and I'm sure there is some defense against her - I just haven't looked at the newer cards.

You're right it's really expensive to try and stay up with all the cards.

but the only thing the card says about the elf is that she is protected against all colours..
not that she attacks the enemy players life..?

When it's your 'turn' you get to say which of your creature cards (the ones you've been able to bring into play) you attack with or keep as a defense, and if more than two people are playing who you want to attack with which creature card.

If you attack with a creature you can't use that creature for defense.

me neither

so dqueene, you mean that each cart has an offensive ability and a defensiver ability, which cant be used at the same time.
so that the angel card OR can defend against all colours, OR takes 4 life from the opposing player??

There's supposed to be a free demo out there you can download to see how to play which might be a whole lot clearer than me explaining. Not very good at it, but I'll try. If Hypatia was here she could help.

Consider 2 players and you each have creature cards & lands with which to attack. Besides the 5 color types of cards (black, white, green, red, blue) there is a 'colorless' type of creature card. That card could attack the Irridescent Angel and hurt her. Let's ignore her for now and just say you have a 3/2 creature card (3 attack 2 defense) and your opponent has a 2/2 creature card (2 attack 2 defense). You decide to go into combat with your 3/2 card. The other player can use their card to defend, if they want to or just take the damage themselves. Let's assume they decide on combat. Your creature card does 3 damage to their card and kills it, sending it to the graveyard. But their card does 2 damage to your card (remember you're a 3/2) which successfully 'kills' your card too - sending it to the graveyard. So you attack and defend all at the same time with a normal creature card. The Irridescent Angel is unique though since she has protection from all colors. The only creature that can harm her is a 'colorless flying creature' so if you attack with her and your opponent only has a colored creature card (they can't use that creature to block her attack) then the damage goes directly to your opponents 'life'.
