Hi guys,

Ok, I'm one of the people who can't get past the Start New Game screen, it shows the icon with the circling ring and then flicks like it's changing screens and goes right to the desktop.

I don't receive any error codes, just the Report you problem to Microsoft box.

Anyway...

I decided to try and install the game on my much older system and just "see" what would happen.

Amazing enough it played through the intro movie and I got to the Character creation screen...though it was VERY choppy and slow. This is about a 6 year old comp that I keep just to have a spare for internet and "older" gaming.

But it has the same XP Pro SP3 installed...just a weaker cpu and video card.

So my problem seems to be the transition to the Intro cut scene.

I'm thinking that I'm having a Codec conflict.

I un-installed my Divx suite and un-installed my WMP and then re-installed it...

Still had the problem though frown

So I'm wondering if there is a fairly easy way to see what codecs are on a system and a way to remove them.

I might just move my Doc folder to another drive and do a Clean Install of XP Pro again to "see" what happens lol

Not looking forward to that BUT I'm like a dog digging for a bone...hard for me to stop till I find it (the problem)

I thought perhaps it was a SecuRom issue or conflict, but they reported back that my analysis report looked ok.

My hardware is all within the norm for running the game easily...so I'm thinking this is a software/driver/codec issue.

Perhaps a clean install is the best way to test that theory.

Basic stats:

ASRock 939 dual mobo / AMR 2 cpu card
AMD 64 X2 5600+
8800GT 500mb
2g ram

Any suggestions on the "codec" theory would be most welcome!!! smile

Has anyone else tried this and had positive results?

Thanks for listening and any help/suggestions/ideas you can give me!

Regards

We're still trying to reproduce this problem but have no system on which this occurs, but the codec theory sounds interesting.

Could youplease check if you can see the Tutorial_Arrival video in media player ? You can find it in the folder where you installed Divinity 2 under data\Video\Story.

Hello Lar_q,

Thank you very much for the reply smile

Yes, that was one thing I thought of trying "after" I had un-installed WMP 11 and then re-installed.

I was able to play it from the folder. It was the one that showed a town with people running as a zeppelin type craft passed overhead.

I believe this was labeled as "intro"...

But the scene I saw on my other computer was one of a man walking out onto a high ramp/walkway.

So, I'll try to locate that one (Tutorial_Arrival) after work (2pm MST)

btw - my older comp did the BSOD after a few minutes because it's just not up to the task of running as demanding a game as D2, so my efforts are to get my "main" system able to run the game wink

Thank you for your help, I'd be happy to run/try any tests you'd like! Just let me know smile

Here's my DxDiag Notes: (in case that might help identify anything)

Do you by any chance have ffdshow or vlc installed ?

I "did" have ffdshow but un-installed it...wonder if there's residuals in the Registry that could cause a problem?

Will have to check on the vlc but I believe I have that still installed...

Are those "red flag" programs that intermix with wmp's codecs?

This is not an official solution yet, as we still have work to do on this, but let me give you an update on where we are with this:

We've managed to reproduce problems reported by messing around with the video codecs. We're still trying to figure out exactly what situations can cause the problem, but it's clear that it can cause problems for Divinity 2, and it explains the never-ending loading screens we've seen reported which up to now didn't occur in our office. Your message was actually the trigger we needed, so thank you very much for that !

The ffdshow question was inspired by a bug we saw reported for Fallout3: http://www.google.com/search?q=ffdshow+fallout3&rls=com.microsoft:*&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1. The steps suggested might solve your problem, but perhaps not as you already uninstalled ffdshow (but traces might indeed persist).

We've discovered that for some odd reason, different codecs were used in the compression of the videos used by Divinity 2. We further discovered that even if they play correctly in Windows Media Player 9, the video playback mechanism in the game doesn't necessarily manage if there's a problem with the codec.

On the machine we managed to reprodce the problem on, this is what happened:

With Windows Media Player 9 the movies played correctly BUT the game didn't render it and hanged as a result.

We installed Windows Media Player 10 and tried to load the same movie. This time, Media Player asked us to install a codec as apparently it couldn't find it. When we allowed it to install the codec, the game ran fine.

Our QA is now checking all the movies, and seeing under which circumstances problems with a specific codec can cause problems with the game. This will take them some time, but once that is done, we should be able to point out which codecs you need to download to make the game run.

I recommend waiting until we've clearly isolated the problem, but if you want to try something yourself, you might want to install the latest version of Media Player, and try to play the movie that's causing problems to see if it now asks you for a codec. If it does, installing that codec should solve your problem. Alternatively, you can try replacing the video that blocks you with the intro video (which I guess you could see) as a temporary workaround.

Thank you once again for posting here and pointing us in the right direction.

Well, I've tried "everything" I can think of these last 3 days and it's just not working.

Tonight I tried rolling back my wmp to 9, un-installed VLC, ran a reg. cleaner to catch any of the left behind files.

Turned PhysX off.

Changed my desktop rez to 800x600 and 1024x768, and changed the rez to match in the game's options menu...

Nothing worked, I simply can't get past the "Start New Game" loading icon before it shuts down and sends me to the desktop. Sometimes with the Microsoft error report to send...but never with any kind of error code. No Blue Screens of Death lol

btw Lar_q, I CAN play every video from the game folder...it never said I needed a codec, they all played fine.

So short of doing a fresh install of XP Pro I have no clue what to try next frown

A bit "deflated" atm but I won't give up!!!

But I think a break is called for, to re-energize and perhaps allow some free-form thoughts and ideas to come to the surface lol

Any more suggestions I'm all ears wink

Thanks for all the help!

I'll keep you posted smile

Regards

There are 2 different codecs that we use, and with the link from Forktong and this, you should have both covered.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Larian_QA!

I'm hopeful, but since I can play them from their folder individually I'm wondering if something else is interrupting the transition from the menu screen to the cut scene.

I hope that's not the case, will be nice if loading these codecs fixes the issue smile

Will keep you posted!

Warm Regards

I FIXED my problem!!!

I can play the game now smile

Here's the run down of what I did:

I tried the Windows Codecs that you suggested, the win9 ones wouldn't install though, the other set did...but I was still having the exact same problem.

I tried different resolutions just to be sure, but no go.

So I had basically decided that I'd hang onto the game until I upgraded my comp and either did a fresh install of XP on a new drive or upgraded to win7.

Having un-installed all the various "codecs" that I could find like ffshow and my divx suite...I decided that for now I might as well get an xvid codec installed so I could view the various files I have (tv, movies and such) without a problem.

I decided to install the K-Lite Full "codec" package that I found on the filehippo.com site, I've used it before and felt it was a safe site.

Ran the install of the latest version and it "flagged" several files/reg entries that were in it's words, broken. And it recommended that I remove them...I did so as I was prompted to during the install.

Once it was all installed (did the default/suggested ver) I decided to try D2 one more time...just to see lol

And it worked!!!

Been playing for a few hours now with no major problems...other than my ram slowly climbing from the initial 70% load to the mid to high 90% (memory leak?)

Anyway...I'm very happy to have found a way to fix my codec problems.

I'd highly suggest this package to any who are having the same issues, might just be broken or corrupted files/registry issues and it looks like this K-Lite package will identify them and allow you to remove them when installing it's package.

here's the link for any who might care to try it:

Best of luck to all and Thank You for all the suggestions and help!!!

Warm Regards

Good to know that reinstalling your codecs fix your problems. Been using this klite codec packs for quite some years. Beside the site you mentioned, you can actually get various codecs packs from the site below

I had several problems and reinstalling codexes didn't fix it (and I had Nvidia 8800 GT, which was a reccomended card). I switched this weekend to an ATI Radeon 5750 and (almost) all problems seem to be gone.

i tried this, but still the game freezes on the intro cinematic.

i have tried pretty much everything mentioned in the Technical problems section, including but not limited to, uninstalling and reinstalling the game, everything on the First Aid Kit for Divinity II, everything on the when Div2 does not start or crashes, everything on 2 minutes fix for stuttering AND graphics issues!!, everything on For people with stuttering graphics (even though the graphics don't stutter as far as i can tell since i have haven't been able to get past the intro).
i even went so far as to run Filmerit. it found 1 error which was the DivX codecs, i fixed it but still can't get past the intro cinematic frown
after all this and i still can't play. looks like i'll have to wait for the next patch. we shouldn't have to do tech support for a game. this seems like another rush job to release the game without properly testing and eliminating the bugs.

my specs are in sig.

I hear ya...but as far as my problem goes it was clearly a problem with my system (that i wasn't aware of) that was causing my problem, not Larian or the game's fault.

I think that many times there are "exceptions" and variances that the QA guys just can't foresee or test for. They have to assume certain parameters and go from there and try to help those like me who apparently have an issue they're unfamiliar with.

Would of been very easy for me to blame the game and/or the developers...but I would of been wrong wink

Hope you are able to figure it out soon!!!

I played for about 4 hrs last night and absolutely love the game, definitely worth the effort to troubleshoot any issues to get working properly imo smile

i may continue to troubleshoot the issue, but what else can i do besides what i have tried? short of re-installing Windows there isn't much else i can do. and that would be a monumental task as i have many dozens of programs that i would also have to install. i don't see one game as a reason to do that.
i was thinking of removing all codecs i have installed but then i thought even if i do remove them, there would be remnants left over that i couldn't remove using Add/Remove programs in control panel. is there any utility that i could use to remove all traces of any and all codecs.
oh btw i forgot to mention that i am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

i have the K-Lite Codec pack installed too. i have been using it for years, but this is the first problem i have had with it that is game related. i think i will try a few other things that i don't think will make a difference. eg. playing the game videos externally using Media Player Classic (part of the K-Lite Codec pack). i will see how that goes.

edit: i played the start movie and it works fine. i don't think it's a codec issue because if it were then it wouldn't play correctly.
