Hi all, as is evident I'm new to these forums, and have been encountering a problem since last weekend when I purchased this game from Steam when they had a deal up, per the recommendation of a friend of how great this game was, as well as reading up on it prior to purchasing it. I loved Diablo 2 and it would be great to play another ARPG such as this.

The problem I run into however is that the game will not start up at all really, I click to play, whether it from the Steam client library, or the .exe icon from the Divine Divinity folder, and a pop up regarding the configuration comes up.

I put in my T.V screen resolution ( I have my newer PC displaying through my T.V through 1080P )which is 1768x992 and the game starts up into a black screen for a few moments as would be expected for most any game as it's initializing, but then it immediately crashes with a pop up that it's stopped responding and I'm brought back to my Steam library, or back to the Divine Divinity folder.

I've tried running it through every display resolution, checking to run it through Software, tried running it through compatibility mode through every selection given, even tried running it as Administrator and the closest I get to anything working is the aforementioned brief black screen, before the game stops responding.

Any insight into a possible fix or suggestion into getting this gem of a game to work would be greatly appreciated, as my friend won't stop talking about how great it is, and I'm frankly a bit jealous ouch

You say you have your "newer PC" hooked up to your TV... Does that mean you could try the game on your old PC, or temporarily use your old PC's monitor with the new PC, to see if that would get the game to start?

If you start the configuration program manually (from a shortcut or the configtool.exe program) and set the resolution (without testing, since that causes a problem), does the game itself behave the same when starting it directly?

With Beyond Divinity, a couple people had problems with the game creating the configuration files (ie it would start in software mode, but crash in Direct3D), but if the files already existed it would be fine. I know you tried software mode already, so this isn't the same DirectX issue, but if you want to give it a shot you could download my configuration files (slashed*.cfg files and config.div edited to set the resolution to 1768x992). Extract the files into your Divine Divinity folder (not a subfolder, as Windows may wish to default to) and try starting the game again. If they don't help you can delete them, or run the configuration program and reset them.

Try emailing support@larian.com, with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic. Include a dxdiag report (In Win 7 click Start, then enter "dxdiag" into the start menu box; In XP, click Start, then Run, and enter "dxdiag" in the Run dialog box. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool should then appear. Click on "Save all information" and save the file to your desktop, or somewhere handy to attach to an email).

Tried moving your suggested Configuration settings into the folder with no success.

I haven't tried hooking my old monitor up though I will surely try that before running the Dxdiag and emailing it for certainty.

From the Win 7? Steam topic, where a similar issue was reported using a TV as a monitor:
