Ok, I am level 8 and it's a small disaster.
I'm a surviver with 40 agility and I barely kill anything on my way to the army barracks.

The reason is that I miss my swings about 90% of the time. Killing a single orc takes ages, while I have to waste all my mana and health potions trying to keep myself healed. And those orcs always come in group. A spider is nearly unkillable for me: I had to lure it into the army barracks where the soldiers helped me kill it.

So I get the followup quest from the barracks: Go to the army camp right next to a destroyed village. Before I even get there I bump into an elite orc. I sight, run back to the barracks...where the orc manages to kill EVERYONE in the barracks and his still has more than half of his HP left. My arrows almost never hit him and the times it does, it only does a really minimal amount of damage.

I am getting convinced there is something very wrong with my game. I tried several quests, but there is nothing available where I don't immediately get slaughtered.

Currently I am using a bat of striking and a well made short bow. Any thoughts?

Level 8 is a pretty low to do the army quests, but I don't think an elite orc should be able to take out the whole army camp.

What is the chance to hit listed in the stats (for an average level 8 opponent)? Even fighting higher level opponents I don't think you should be missing 90% of the time.

Well it's the next quest you get after finishing the starter village since you have to get an escort for the healers from the barracks:

My hitchance according to my stats is 73%

My agility is that hight because I've been pumping all my points in there, trying to get my hit% to a decent level.

40 agility on level 8 ? That's (without bonus to Agility via charm or equipment) 25 points = 5 times of a level up spended on agility. Rest 3 level ups (15 points) to reach level 8: on which stats do you spend these 15 points ?

Do not forget investing at least points in Constitution !
And don't forget that the Survivor can do that "Special Move" that is called "Sneaking" so the enemies mostly see you only if you walk nearby them ... A very handy special move! smile

I mostly start first with points in Constitution, then later in other stats. My survivor is now level 7 and her Const. is at least 25 .
It's a good idea to invest early on 1 point in Alchemy skill so you can combine small potions of mana + health to make a small Restoration potion (healing MP & HP at the same time!), always more and better than drinking 1 HP & 1 MP potion ...

Solving a quest in Aleroth healing 2 soldiers, have you done that ? If so, go talk to Goemoe and you learn for free one level of the Restoration skill so you can use that to heal fast !

O, and never think you're forced to do something in DD ... explore & find new ways to take XP points, new quests, new ways to discover more vendors to buy better gear if needed, etc ....

Hope this info can do a thing or two wink

PS: 73% chance to hit a level 8 monster ... but an Elite Orc is of a higher level, maybe 15 or more I believe ! Not sure, but then that "73 %" can mislead you ! No ?

Any quest I tried I can't kill the monsters. I healed one of the 2 soldiers in Aleroth (using that orb), but I didn't get a reward for it.

I know a single orc slaughtering an entire camp is hard to believe, so I recorded it on twitch:
http://www.twitch.tv/boe2/b/397745395

First there is some confusion because I accidently get the attention of a boar and a spider as well.
Around 0:50, notice how much trouble the guards and me are having killing that single spider
Around 1:22 the elite orc finds his way in, and...well...goodbye barracks.

There is a way to heal both soldiers in Aleroth. You need to explore the village and find a way to duplicate the healing gem.

Usually it is better if you delay main plot quests until you have explored and done other side quests. Completing the army quests, for example, would give you an invitation to the castle (1 of 3 such invitations), which leads to an area which would be quite difficult on level 8, if you were to sneak or use a spider statuette complete the army quests. I finished off much of Ferol (the first map) and Versdistis, and cleared the Rivertown sewers before heading to the castle, and didn't have any problem with the area after; some people suggest doing some of the Dark Forest first, as well.

What is your hit rate with the orcs around Aleroth, or opponents near in the farmlands?

You may want to explore around the farmlands, poor quarters, etc, and stick near inhabited areas until you get better equipment or do a few side quests to level.
If you head north and east of the farmlands you will eventually come to Ars Magicana, where there are a couple good merchants. Stick to the paths and there will be signs, and fewer opponents than off the path (there are still thugs, and the odd hostile animal, etc).

You must have skipped the catacombs. Level 8 is about the right level to be before leaving Aleroth. Enemies in that war camp area are like level 13-19. You should be about level 15 before attacking that war camp.

A question @boe2 :
have you healed Simon or Verlat ? I hope you healed Verlat because he later give you something really valuable if you meet him again, in Verdistis ! smile

Yes, I did save him, got me a nice neclace smile

I am level 21 now. Did as adviced and went to do some other stuff. really having a good time.
I defeated the succubus in the hall of the Council of Seven and found it really hard. It involved shooting arrows, running away, stealth (survivor), repeat until dead. Actually, there were more fights I was only able to survive by using this tactic. It seems harder than it's supposed to be.
I still constantly have the feeling I am underleveled even though I try to solve all quests I encounter. By now I can kill most stuff without effort in the main area. However, I decided to do some more exploring before gathering the council members and went to explore the Dark Forest since there is a lot of new stuff to do there.
Now, I find that the animals there are around lvl 27-30. Does this mean I am still too low level for this area, or is this normal?

Also, I am still confused about the strength and agility stat. STR adds to melee damage and AGI adds to accuracy. This means that there is no way to get extra ranged damage trough stats, only extra accuracy?

I was around level 40 completing the main quests for gathering the Council of Seven ...
If you die in an instand fighting the beasts in the Dark Forest it's best to first level-up more elswhere, but at level 21 it's doable, I believe.

If you increase your strength the damage of each kind of weapon go up, also the damage value of bows !
More agility = more offense & defense value & stronger bows (and other melee weapons) require more agility !

You can Always go for the passive skill "Bow Expertice" so you can shoot faster (recuperation time become shorter with this skill).

So, I had most my points pumped in agility in an attempt to make a purely ranged character. Turns out that is really hard against higher level enemies (LOTS of misses) and is really slow against equal level enemies since you have to run and hide all the time (not enough STR to get decent armor too).
To come back to my original title: Yes, my stats are broken, but I broke them myself smile.
I got the savegame editor and redistributed my stats and skills: Now I am more of a warrior with healing and Freeze abilities and killing goes a LOT faster. I spent the evening grinding enemies with relative ease until I was level 27. Now I am on the path of freeing council members, keeping the dark forest for last smile

Thanks for the advice though. You guys were a great help smile

Glad you got it ! smile

As a warrior or mage or whatever type you can always use a bow as a back-up in times of need !
If you like to kill lots of enemies in a fast way just try the skill "Elemental Arrows" ('Path of the Ranger' under the warrior skill tree)! Great powerful skill and do not need much mana !!
Especially in the Dark Forest this skill is very useful, but also in the Sewers of Rivertown and Verdistis ! wink
