my friend and i did the first tutorial dungeon and then helped the guards defend the town from the orcs.

from there we are level 2 and EVERY single direction we go is too difficult to travel. weve gone to the mine shaft with the skeletons, to the north of the city, to the west, and east.

the enemies in every area either 1 or 2 shot us. our best bet was the level 2 skeleton men in the mine, but there are so many of them at a time that we cant get through it without dying or using a crazy amount of potions.

we tried taking a break and doing quest in the city to gain a level or 2 but the exp its giving isnt enough to get us to level 3.

is there some direction or something im missing? and its not like were rpg or gaming noobs at all, i mean were playing divinity after all. kind of frustrating.

There's a level 2 dungeon in the town itself if you dig around hard enough.

And remember to save often...

There's going to be a difficulty slider in the final game. At the moment you can indeed get out of your depth. Skills aren't balanced yet. Ranger typically gets an easy run. The starting bow power is deadly in the current build.

The tunnel under Cyseal is the easiest place to start for combat, followed by the north west gate (the one that is open). If you lead opponents back towards the gate, or combat is triggered close enough to start with, the guards can come out to help you.
You can get experience around town, but it also helps if you loot everything you can get away with (sneak before stealing, if there is anyone around who could potentially catch you, and maybe save first). Better equipment can make a big difference at the start of the game, as could an extra spell or two (though you will not meet the requirements yet for many spell books).

There are a couple companions you can recruit as party members, who should make a significant difference in combat (unless one or both main characters took the Lone Wolf talent, which would reduce the maximum party size).
One is in the King Crab tavern, the other in the mayor's house.

The update tomorrow or Friday will include difficulty settings (saves will not be compatible, though, due to the changes and additions being made).

I highly recommend hanging around the city more. There are a significant number of quests to do in town that can help level you up before you venture out. Also, try to steal and loot everything you can. Find/Buy/Steal better equipment-- especially ones that add stat bonus like STR DEX INT, as well as anything that adds to Way of the ____ for your characters.

Get a sword that adds Way of the Warrior, then purchase a skillbook from Aureus that gives a Way of the Warrior skill you don't have. Equip the sword, learn the skill, and then toss that sword if you find a better one (maybe an exploit that will change in the future). Do the same for all of your characters (Arhu has skillbooks for mages and the arrow vendor has them for rangers). You do have 4 correct? You only have 2?? Go pick up some companions (in the library is a mage and in the tavern is a warrior). Rolling with 4 is significantly easier than going with just 2 (unless you've specifically taken the Lone Wolf route).

There are XP bonuses for exploration. Find a house that's locked and find a way in. Find a basement or backroom in one of the locations and get inside. Easy XP bonus for exploration. And you don't need a rogue with lockpicks to do it (try fire, try weapon bashing, try scrolls, etc).

There are some mobs outside the city that are easier than others. Just venture out a short ways and pick off small groups of 1-3 mobs until you're level 4-6. Once you're 6, with a solid group of 4 with decent gear and skills, you can handle anything on the map.

kind of frustrating.

I have heard that already, halas. Hey level design is great, you just have to get used to it.
Stealing and exploiting the rules are a good way to go in this beta. Murdering merchants and NPCs is also a great way to get new gear and XPs. I hope you like roleplaying as a thief and murderer, it makes things so much easier.
And some character builds are easier to play with than some others. And the good choice of talents makes a real difference. Don't waste your points in anything that is not totally dedicated to combat, it would be a terrible waste of time and effectiveness...
And keep in mind you are noob source hunters, send on their first mission. That way, you might not be to overconfident.

It's also a good idea to go back to the initial beach area and fully explore it if you haven't already done so. There's a fair amount of stuff lying around and one 'quest' (not counting the tutorial tomb) to be found; you can get a little more XP out of that.

Otherwise, there are a few situations in town that you can resolve without fighting, or at least without having to fight. One of the traders in the market is missing something and there's an elf behind the tavern who needs your help. The healer's apprentice is also facing a difficult decision. You can pick up hints of a few other things that might need doing, and many of the resulting dialogues will give your characters +1s to various personality traits, which can help with early skill development.

All the advice listed above is good and will help you out. However if you are really stuck, roll a Ranger and use Arrow Spray. It is stupid overpowered for a lvl 1 skill and it will hold strong until the end game. This skill can easily kill 2-3 mobs in a single shot when aimed properly. Even if they nurf the damage on the skill its still a really good AOE and will help your other chars make short work of whats left.
